Divine Worship & Holy Communion

The Seven Holy Mysteries

Fasting & Feasting

Veneration of Saints & Icons

Ascetical Practice & Theosis

The Orthodox tradition emphasizes asceticism — the spiritual discipline of prayer, fasting, and virtuous living — as essential to growth in holiness. Through ascetical practices, the faithful cooperate with God's grace in achieving theosis: deification.

Theosis is the goal of Orthodox spiritual life — the transformation of the human person to become, by grace, a partaker of the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4). It is not a metaphor or a distant reward, but the very purpose for which humanity was created and redeemed.

"God became man so that man might become God."

— Saint Athanasius the Great

The Path of Orthodox Spiritual Life

Daily Prayer

Morning and evening prayers, the Jesus Prayer ("Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner"), and prayer before and after meals — the Orthodox day begins and ends with God.

Regular Fasting

Wednesdays, Fridays, and the great fasting seasons train the body and soul in self-discipline and direct the heart toward God rather than earthly pleasures.

Frequent Confession

The sacrament of healing — through honest examination of conscience and repentance before God, the Orthodox Christian is cleansed and renewed on the path to holiness.

Holy Communion

Regular reception of the Body and Blood of Christ at the Divine Liturgy is the highest form of union with God available in this life — the foretaste of the Kingdom to come.

Theosis — Union with God

Through all these means of grace, the faithful are gradually transformed by the Holy Spirit — not losing their humanity, but having it perfected and illumined by the divine light of God.
